WHY DID KĀLA-KṚṢṆA DĀSA, DVIVIDHĀ & OTHER FALL ?

Objection — We know that Kāla Kṛṣna dāsa who is Lavanga Sakhā of the Lord inGoloka [Gaurganodeśa dīpikā 132] and Navadvipa fell down even though having direct association of Mahāprabhu. Dvividhā the monkey fell down, How do you reconcile all this ?

Refutation

Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī gives the answer in Bhakti Sandarbha Anucched 286 —

tathā—ye cātra śrī-rāmādy-upāsanāyāṁ mainda dvividādaya āvaraṇa-devatāḥ, te tu tadīya- nitya-dhāma-gatā nityāḥ śuddhāś ca jñeyāḥ | yathākrūrāgha-marṣaṇe tena śrī-prahlādādayo dṛṣṭāḥ| ya eva śrī-prahlādaḥ pṛthvī-dohane’pi vatso’bhūt, tadānīṁ taj-janmābhāvāt, cākṣuṣa-manvantara eva hiraṇyakaśipor jātatvāt | anye tu sva-sva-dhāmni nitya-prākaṭyasyaiva śrī-rāmādeḥ prapañca-prākāṭyāvasaraṁ prāpya tat-sāhāyyārthaṁ nitya-pārṣada-mainda-dvividādi-śakty-āveśino jīvāḥ sugrīvādi-bhāgavata-dveṣi-bāli-prabhṛti-sambandhād uttara-kāle bhagavad-vidveṣi-narakāsurādi-saṅgāc ca duṣṭa-bhāvābhavantīty avadheyam | prapañca-loka-miśratvenaiva prākaṭya-sambhavāt |

The Āvaraṇa deities like Mainda and Dvivida in worship of Rāma are nitya-siddhas dwelling in the Lord’s eternal abode. When Akrūra performed agha-marṣaṇa in the Yamunā he saw Prahlāda and others surrounding Viṣṇu, Prahlāda also became the calf when Pṛthu milked the earth. This is the eternal Prahlāda since at that time Prahlāda had not been born on earth during Svayambhuva-manvantara. He was born during Cākṣuṣa Manvantara at the time of Hiraṇyakaśipu. There are others however, jīvas, who are endowed with some of the śakti of eternal associates like Mainda and Dvivida (and are called by the same name) to help Rāma or other avatāras as well. These jīvas became corrupted. Mainda associated with Bāli who hated the devotee Sugrīva. Later, Dvivida associated with Narakāsura who hated the Lord. This occurs because the Lord’s appearance with his devotee is mixed with the elements of the material world(jīvas invested with nitya-siddha’s powers).

Now one may ask even after having the association of the Lord how can’t these jīvas (empowered by nitya-siddha’s powers) recognise him. The answer is given by Bhagavān himself —

avajānanti māṁ mūḍhā mānuṣīṁ tanum āśritam|
paraṁ bhāvam ajānanto mama bhūta-maheśvaram||

Fools deride Me when I descend in the human form. They do not know My transcendental nature as the Supreme Lord of all that be.

BHAGAVĀNA’S ATTAINMENT IS POSSIBLE ONLY BY “HIS WILL”

nāyam ātmā pravacanena labhyo na medhayā na bahudhā śrutena
yam evaiṣa vṛṇute tena labhyas  tasyaiṣa ātmā vivṛṇute tanuṁ svām

“Bhagavāna cannot be gained by the study of the Veda, nor by thought or meditation, nor by much hearing. Whom He chooses, by him it may be gained; to him the He reveals His being.” ~The Kaṭha Upaniṣad

And what kind of person does Bhagavāna choose?

teṣāṁ satata-yuktānāṁ bhajatāṁ prīti-pūrvakam
dadāmi buddhi-yogaṁ taṁ yena mām upayānti te

“To those who are constantly devoted and worship Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me.” [Bhagavad-gītā 10.10]

nāhaṁ vedair na tapasā  na dānena na cejyayā
śakya evaṁ-vidho draṣṭuṁ dṛṣṭavān asi māṁ yathā

“The form which you are seeing with your transcendental eyes cannot be understood simply by studying the Vedas, nor by undergoing serious penances, nor by charity, nor by worship. It is not by these means that one can see Me as I am.” [Bhagavad-gītā 11.23]

Thus after knowing Bhagavān via the agency of Śrī Guru we can Look towards Bhagavān and end our eternal identification of the material nature once and for all.
